It has been another busy week in Caterpillar class!

In English we have been very busy writing our own versions of Little Red Riding Hood, by creating a new character for the story. We have looked at character traits and adjectives of the existing characters to help us come up with our new fantastic versions.

In maths this week we have been looking at place value and finding different ways to partition numbers. We have used equipment to help us with number sentences and have been looking at where numbers go on a number line.

We have also have an interesting week continuing to look at Lord Nelson.We have looked at different food groups and the benefits of eating the right amount from each food group and how many sailors suffered from illnesses due to the lack of balanced diets. we tried out different exercises sailors could do on board ship to keep healthy while monitoring our body and heart rate.

Welcome to Year 2 Caterpillar Class!

In Maths Caterpillars have been working very hard looking at number bonds and place value; we used tens and unit sheets, numicon, bead strings and number cards to help us add and subtract. 

In English we have been reading Little Red Riding Hood,re-telling it using time connectives and working together to act out the story.

Our topic for this term is Lord Nelson, we have been looking at a time line of his life,drawing portraits of him and talking about his diet.

It has been a busy week in Caterpillar class.

We have been super stars in Caterpillar Class this week!

On Tuesday we had a very exciting day meeting our Year 2 Teachers and classes! Some of us will be staying in Caterpillar Class with Miss Smith, and some of us will be moving to Dragonflies with Mrs Heaffey, and Centipedes with Mrs Barker. We are really looking forward to Year 2 now!

In English, we read a story about a girl called Sophie who wrote a letter to her Dad as he was working on ships far away. After reading the story, we wrote a letter back to Sophie from Dad. We had to think about what Dad had been up to and what we could put in our letter. 

We also practiced our tricky words, making sure we could spell them correctly and then testing each other on them. 

In Maths, we had some quizzes to do to test our maths knowledge. We all tried our hardest and did the best we can!

In Topic, we looked at what was suitable to take on holiday to the seaside. We looked at how to stay safe on the beach and in the sea, and how to protect ourselves from the sun. 

We also looked at how the beach had changed over the years, for example, what was new, the different shops along the seafront and how differently people dressed for the beach. 

We have been super busy this week in Caterpillar class! 

In English, we have been looking at market stalls and what they sell. We then had to write about our own market stall, persuading people to come and buy things from our stall! We had lots of great ideas, selling flowers, books, jewellery and pets!

In Maths, we have been adding two numbers together, breaking up the smaller number to help us. We also looked at adding 3 numbers together using our number bonds to 10 and 20 to help us. 

In Topic, we have been looking at Great Yarmouth Sea Front, and looking at all the different businesses there. We then designed and wrote our own postcard, pretending we were on holiday there. 

We also learnt about our different senses; taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing. We then used our sense of smell to try and guess what different food was. It was hard!

We also used our sense of taste to try the different foods we could smell!

In English this week, we have been reading a book all about a lighthouse keeper and how his lunch kept being eaten by seagulls. To make sure the seagulls stopped eating his lunch, they put mustard in his sandwiches! Through the week, we made a list of all the yummy food we would take on a picnic, and thought up disgusting food ideas of our own! 

At the end of the week, we wrote our own version of the story, changing the characters and food in the story. 

In Maths, we have been comparing numbers, looking at how they are different, which is more or less, and odd and even. We then used a blank number line and had to try to fill it in, using what we know about number lines. 

At the end of the week, we looked at the position of objects and movement, including half and quarter turns. 

In Topic, we have been super busy looking at who works at sea. We talked about the different jobs and why they are important. We also looked at a lighthouse keeper again, and what his job is. 

We then made our own lighthouses!

We also tried English and American mustard!

Most of us didn't like the English mustard! 

But we liked the American one!

Wow! What an amazing week we've had in Caterpillar Class!

We've been trying super hard in English this week working on our fantasy story. We looked at the film 'Finding Nemo' to help us think of the setting, the characters and the adventure for our own story. We then wrote our own story, using a beginning, middle and end, with an adventure in the middle of the story. Miss Smith, Mrs Beck and Miss Carter were very impressed with how well we had worked!

We have also been trying hard in Maths, looking at place value in 2 digit numbers. We used a tens and units sheet to help us add and subtract numbers. We then looked at recognising place in value in different forms, such as number cards and using numicon. 

We have started our new topic this half term, which is the seaside! We discussed what we already know about the seaside and what we would like to find out. 

We also looked at floating and sinking. We tested out lots of differents objects in a tank of water, and discussed why they floated or sunk. We then made our own boats to test out! 

We've worked hard this week in Caterpillar Class!

In English we learnt all about speech marks and how to use them. We watched a video a the beginning of the week, and then at the end of the week, we retold the story of the video using speech marks. 

In Maths, we have been learning all about measurements and capacity. We looked at jugs of water and had to find out how many millilitres each jug had in it. We even looked at their bottles of juice for lunchtimes to see how many millilitres they contained. 

In Topic, we learnt more about the artists Vincent Van Gogh and Monet. We also researched them in our Computing Lesson and found out lots of interesting information. We then painted our own picture of Van Gogh's 'Starry Night'. We were very careful, looking at the different brush strokes he had used. We also looked at Archimboldo's pictures and how he used vegetables to make faces. We then made our own faces using different vegetables. They looked great!
